Market Update – Slow Market Pickup in China

Uncertainty looms for the global shipping industry as China, the biggest export market, experiences a slow pickup after Chinese New Year. Despite the decline in freight rates, the shipping demand from Europe and North America remains weak as a result of the global inflation and the over-stocked inventories. As Covid-19 restrictions eases across the world, the previous logistics bottlenecks and congestion situation eases, resulting in additional capacity. With the new builds being delivered progressively since late 2022, the extra capacity along with the weakened demand becomes a big issue for carriers.

In an attempt to manage the situation and to reduce the idling time of vessels, carriers have already blanked record number of sailings, and some shipping alliance detoured more ships round the Cape of Good Hope, much to the dismay of shippers who have to suffer the consequences of additional transit times.

Nevertheless, the attempts don't seem to reverse the decline in freight rates at the moment. There is currently an undercutting situation in China where carriers struggle to fill their ships. The market will likely stabilize over time, but the current outlook faces a lot of uncertainty.
